Danger 1000 Ocean Swim

The Danger 1000 is comprised of 3 categories.

  • A kids race of 500m
  • A race with multiple age groups of 1km
  • A race divided into gender over 2.5km

Held in the natural amphitheater of Torquay Front Beach, spectators can watch participants through the entire course.

The Danger 1000 Ocean Swim at Pt Danger (Torquay Front Beach) has become one of the biggest and most popular open water swims in Victoria. The 19th Danger 1000 Ocean Swim will be held on 14 January 2017.

This event is run by the Jan Juc SLSC at the very calm, protected and picturesque location that the locals fondly refer to as “Cosy Corner”. This idylic setting is protected by Point Danger. The distance of the triangular course is 1000 metres, hence the name Danger 1000. Around 2000 competitors are expected to compete in the event with ages ranging from 12 – 75.

The event provides a great day for spectators by virtue of the triangular course with the start and finish being almost in the same place. The natural amphitheatre of the grass slopes over looking the course allows excellent viewing of the whole event. A line of mature Norfolk pines allows plenty of shade and it is a great location for a race day picnic. Torquay is an easy drive of a little over an hour from Melbourne and plenty of free parking at the event is available. Permanent bouys define the approximate course year round for those wishing to train.

Prizes are awarded to 12 age group categories for men and women, as well as spot prizes being awarded throughout the day. Each competitor receives and event bag including a T-shirt, swim cap and other goodies.

The water safety provided by qualified Jan Juc SLSC lifesavers is second to none and the event is organised by over 250 Jan Juc volunteer members.

The Danger 1000 is a wonderful event attracting competitors from around the country including previous winner and current record holder, Australian Ironman Champion Ky Hurst of Queensland in the record time of 8 minutes 47 seconds. Good luck beating that!
