Key dates for the 2016 GMHBA Lorne Pier to Pub

  • 2nd Nov 2015 Entries open
  • GMHBA Lorne Mountain to Surf Friday 8th Jan 2016
  • GMHBA Lorne Pier to Pub Saturday 9th Jan 2016

The GMHBA Lorne Pier to Pub is in its 36th year and this year’s event will be held on Saturday, 9 January 2016. The GMHBA Lorne Pier to Pub is the largest open water swim in the world and is organised and run by volunteers from Lorne Surf Life Saving Club. The course is 1.2km from the Lorne Pier to the foreshore in front of the LSLS clubhouse. Lorne is approximately 2 hours south of Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road.

The entries for the GMHBA Lorne Pier to Pub are done on a ballot basis. Firstly you need to register your name via the website www.lornesurfclub.com.au. Once you have done this the ballot opens this year on November 2nd. From this date you have two weeks to put your name in the ballot, again this is done via the website.

We have a category called “Sharkbait members”, this is for any swimmer that has completed 10 or more swims. Sharkbait members have the opportunity to enter and pay in the first two weeks of the ballot.

The ballot closes at midnight on November 13th. If you are successful in the ballot you will receive an email and then you have one week to pay for your position in the race.

After one week, second round offers will be emailed to those who are successful. These people have one week to pay for their position.

After this a third round of offers is emailed. And again, these people have one week to pay for their position. Once this process is complete the remaining people are put on a waiting list. If positions become available we will contact you.

The cost to enter the event is $70 for all competitors.

How early do I need to be there?

Registration on the day of the event is on the Lorne foreshore and opens at 9am until 12 noon.

Changing and gear

There is a gear tent that is available to swimmers to place their belongings whilst they swim the event. There is also a gear truck that travels between the pier and the surf club. Items must be in your registration bag. Please do not put valuables in your bag as we accept no liability for loss.

Marshalling

You need to be at the pier half an hour prior to your race time. It is approximately a 1.5km walk from the foreshore to the pier.

The Swim

If this is your first time swimming in the event be aware of the following:

  1. It is very busy at the beginning of each wave and you can get kicked
  2. Take your time during the race to get your bearings
  3. If distressed, put your hand up, someone will come to you
The Finish

Completely cross the timing mats and proceed up the beach. There will be water available beside the clubhouse. Gear can be collected and there are changing facilities behind the clubhouse.

Sharkbait Members

New sharkbait members from the 2015 swim will automatically be included in the entry system.
New sharkbait members, people who are swimming their 10th, 20th or 30th in the 2016 swim will be listed in the final newsletter.

If you are receiving your sharkbait medal this year medallion awards are at approximately 3:30pm at the presentation dais. If you have any queries regarding your eligibility, please email shark_bait@lornesurfclub.com.au
