Albany Masters Harbour Swim

LiveLighter MSWA Series – Round #7

THE ALBANY MASTERS HARBOUR SWIM is a 4km swim proudly hosted by Masters Swimming Albany Inc. on Easter Saturday each year. It has become an icon event on the open-water calendar and regularly attracts some 150 – 200 swimmers from across the State.
Cash prizes and medals go to each of the first three male and female solo OW swimmers. Medals are awarded to all age group winners.

The Course

In 2014 the event was reversed to swim from the Princess Royal Sailing Club across to the Albany Entertainment Centre. Following the success of this and positive feedback we will swim the same way in 2015. For safety reasons, a two hour time-limit is set for the event.

Eligibility

The swim is open to Solo swimmers (Open-water and Wetsuit divisions), Duo and Quad teams. The minimum age for swimmers is 13 years. The event is conducted under FINA rules for open water swimming and Masters Swimming Australia OWS rules apply.

Safety

Boats are anchored at the 1, 2 and 3km marks for the change-over of Duo and Quad team swimmers and fixed buoys denote the course.

Ample Sea Rescue, Surf and paddle vessels provide the necessary escort for participants during the swim. In particular the Albany Surf Life Saving Club is providing the on water Safety Requirements. Personal paddlers are allowed with the approval of the Swim Referee. All should, where possible, attend any pre-swim briefings.

St John’s Ambulance is always present to provide any necessary medical aid.

Masters Swimming Australia OWS Rules apply.

This swim is a Masters Swimming WA sanctioned event and, as such, all members are covered by personal accident insurance. All participants are covered for Public liability, but non-members may wish to take out their own personal insurance.

Preparation

Swimmers should spend some time training in the ocean to get used to changing conditions. As the swim is often the last event on the open-water calendar, swimmers should be aware that the water temperature is often around 18 degrees, but has occasionally been as low as 16 degrees.
