Five Islands Challenge – Swim 4

Introducing a new Challenge for the Serious Open Water Swimmer. Swim 25 kms in Four days. You will swim in some of the most challenging and exciting swims on offer in Samoa. The Five Islands Challenge is for seasoned Open Water Swimmers with a sense of adventure and ability to match.

Around Upolu there are several islands dotted close to the coast of Samoa’s main island. These islands are outside the safety of the reefs. The challenge involves return swims to each of the islands. Conditions will be challenging given the time of year. You will need to be a strong and competent Open water swimmer. You must also have your own support kayaker. We can arrange this for you in Samoa at your cost.

This Series of Swims is positioned close enough to the end of the NZ and Australian swim seasons to offer swimmers at their peak fitness an end of season challenge in a tropical location.

Weather conditions in early May – the early Trade winds take effect at this time of year. Though the weather tends to be settled the trades invariably come up at 10am each morning and blow throughout the day.

Manono Island (7.5km)

This is a deep and wide open lagoon with Open Water features. The Swim starts at the Manono Uta (mainland Manono) wharf to the tip of the island and return. At 1pm start, the swim will be a low tide start and will go with the current and wind. The challenge is on the way back against the wind and an incoming tide. Add 20-30mins on the way back to your time. The distance is 3.7kms one-way or 7.4kms return.

Fanuatapu & Namua (5km)

An early start to this swim, 6.30am start. The swim is into the incoming tide from the mainland to Fanuatapu (2.5kms). At the island swimmers exit the water to the beach marker and back in for the swim back. At the mid-way marker do a left turn to Namua island. The swim ends at Namua island. Total distance is 5kms.

Nu’usafe’e (4km)

3pm: The swim starts at Poutasi village. Like the morning swim it is into the incoming tide. Swim to the island and around the island inside the island lagoon before heading back to the start through open water. At the end of the swim, we travel a short distance to one of the Resorts for dinner before heading back to our accommodation at Taufua for the night.

Nu’utele Swim (5km)

7am: We don’t have to travel far for this one, the swim starts at the accommodation at Taufua Beach Fales, out through the reef to Nu’utele island and back. We are again swimming against the incoming tide to help us on the way back and through the channel.

Ti’avea Village Swim (3.5km)

7am: On the last day we travel a few kms to the remote village of Ti’avea for a 3.5kms swim in the Bay. The swim is outside reef, from the village to the headland marker to the left then to the right and back to the beach.

The winner of the Event will be Crowned King of the Islands and gets return airfares & Entry the next year to defend the title.
